What is Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on improving the relationship between two individuals in a romantic partnership. It provides a safe and structured space for couples to address their issues, improve communication, and work through conflicts.
Couples seek therapy for various reasons. Some common motivations include:
- Communication difficulties: Couples may struggle to express their needs, listen to each other, or understand one another. Therapy helps them develop healthier communication patterns and enhance their understanding of each other’s perspectives.
- Conflict resolution: Couples often encounter conflicts that can escalate and become detrimental to their relationship. Therapy offers tools and strategies to manage conflicts constructively, fostering compromise and resolution.
- Intimacy and connection: Over time, couples may experience a decline in emotional and physical intimacy. Therapists help couples explore and strengthen their emotional and sexual connection, creating a more fulfilling bond.
- Trust issues and infidelity: Trust is essential for a healthy relationship. Couples grappling with trust issues or the aftermath of infidelity can benefit from therapy to rebuild trust, heal emotional wounds, and restore the relationship’s foundation.
- Life transitions: Major life changes, such as having children, career shifts, or relocation, can strain a relationship. Couples therapy provides support and guidance during these transitions, helping partners navigate the challenges together.
- Pre-marital counseling: Couples preparing for marriage often seek therapy to address potential issues, establish realistic expectations, and develop essential skills for a successful partnership.
- Strengthen a healthy relationship: Even couples who are generally happy and satisfied can benefit from couples therapy as a proactive measure to deepen their connection and improve their relationship skills. By engaging in therapy, these couples can explore ways to further enhance their communication, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. Couples therapy can serve as a valuable platform for personal growth and self-awareness, allowing partners to better understand each other’s needs and desires, and cultivate a more resilient and fulfilling relationship.
- Relationship Termination: While the primary goal of therapy is typically to improve and strengthen relationships, it can also provide a supportive and constructive environment for couples to navigate the difficult process of separation or divorce. Additionally, couples therapy can be instrumental in fostering healthy communication during the separation process, minimizing conflict, and facilitating effective co-parenting if children are involved.
Overall, couples therapy aims to enhance communication, increase understanding, promote emotional connection, and equip couples with tools to navigate challenges. It provides a supportive environment where couples can explore their relationship dynamics and work towards a healthier and more satisfying partnership.

Do You Take Insurance For Couples Therapy?
Our clinicians that see primarily couples and families are considered Out-Of-Network (OON) with all insurance providers. Couples Therapy for Relationship Distress/Marriage Counseling is currently not covered by Medicare or commercial health insurance providers. While relationships can certainly be affected by the presence of unmanaged mental health symptoms, the relationship itself is not considered a “medical necessity” by insurance providers. Occasionally, a partner is brought into therapy as an adjunct to individual therapy to support treatment of a client’s qualified medical disorder, where relationship problems are not the primary concern. For instance an individual with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) may have a partner join sessions to learn more about OCD and ways they can support their partner outside of sessions.

How Long Can We Expect To Be In Therapy?
While there’s no set time frame for any couple to be in therapy, typically couples sessions can range anywhere from 1-24 sessions. However, our goal is for you and your partner to get back on track as quickly as possible.
