My Approach

Trials and difficulties are a natural part of the human experience. However, it is possible to face these things while still living a healthy, fulfilling, meaningful life. And it is possible to love who you are without having to be perfect. I am here to help you to learn to do just that.

I specialize in working with adults with complicated concerns, such as dual diagnoses, mood disorders, depression, substance abuse histories, and anxiety. I work with individuals to develop coping skills, to improve relations through better communication, and to disrupt unhealthy patterns of thoughts and/or behaviors.

I believe that the counseling office should be the safest place that you could ever be. It is the place where you can be angry, depressed, utterly heart broken, or completely fall apart without judgement, without shame, and with complete acceptance of who you are and how you feel.

  • Experience

For the past 14+ years, I have been fortunate enough to have worked with a wide variety of individuals experiencing a multitude of different concerns, in a variety of settings.

I have been with Third Wave for 6+ years, as a therapist, clinical supervisor, Clinical Director, and now as the Director of Clinical Operations.  Prior to joining the team here, I spent a total of 5 years leading Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams, providing support for individuals with Severe and Persistent Mental Illnesses.  Additionally, I have worked in the foster care system, providing therapy and substance use treatment for adolescent foster children, and providing substance use education and training for foster parents. I have also worked as an inpatient therapist, providing individual, group, and family therapy for individuals in a behavioral health unit within a general hospital setting.

During my graduate work, I was able to intern with the NC Department of Health and Human Services in the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, where I assisted individuals with Mental Health and Substance Use diagnoses return to work. As a doctoral intern, I was privileged enough to provide treatment to individuals serving in the United States military in a private inpatient substance use treatment facility . During this time, I was also able to help develop, and co-coordinate the Navigate Counseling clinic at East Carolina University, where I also provided individual and group counseling services.

In addition to my clinical work, I have conducted and published research focused on the military population, substance use disorders, and process addictions.

Sadness

We’ve all woken up and felt sad before.  Something happened the night before that we’re just not over yet.  It’s the anniversary of a tough event, death of a loved one, etc. We can all expect to feel this way from time…

Intentionality

Most people spend more time planning a one-week vacation than they spend planning their life. – Michael Hyatt I recently mentioned to someone that I had gone to see a show that they had been interested in seeing.  When I said it,…
