My Approach

In my view, psychotherapy is primarily about using the relationship between the therapist and the client for the purpose of intentionally adjusting unwanted patterns of thought and/or behavior. I appreciate that it can be a difficult decision to come to therapy and want to make the experience comfortable for you while also pushing you to make the changes that you want to see in your life. I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but also draw from Motivational Interviewing and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. I use EMDR to treat trauma and I incorporate it into the treatment of anxiety, depression, athletic performance, and substance use concerns.

  • Experience

After graduating from the UNC Social Work Program, I went to the University of Colorado at Boulder to do a 2-year post-master’s fellowship.  I maintained a full case load and was also immersed in group, substance abuse, and crisis therapy trainings to further my practice.  When that program was over, I worked for a year doing therapy with individuals with severe mental illnesses through a community mental health program.  After that, I was hired as the director of the student counseling center at North Carolina Wesleyan College.  Through my work on college campuses, I have had the opportunity to work with client’s experiencing a vast range of concerns.  I have continued my education through an intensive EMDR externship which has allowed me to provide evidenced based and highly effective trauma therapy.
